Yum, yum it's coconut oil!

As you know when Gramercy came to us his little body was in rough shape.  The one thing that we really struggled to get a handle on was his "funky" dog smell.  We tried a variety of things and what worked wonders was him eating coconut oil.

After about 2 weeks his funk was gone and his coat is now beautiful!  Gramercy loves coconut oil and it's very healthy for him.  Here's a great post from Dr Jean Dodd's blog post on the benefits of coconut oil for your pet

We started Gramercy out at 1/2 teaspoon twice a day for 1 weeks.  We then shifted him up to 1 teaspoon twice a day and he's been doing great.

Gramercy knows what comes out of this jar and he loves it!
Here's Gramercy's meal time prep.  His 1 teaspoon of coconut oil in the bowl and his less than 1/4 cup of kibble.

This is a great food bowl if you don't want to deal with a more complex feeder or if you are feeding multiple dogs at once.  This is the Dogit Go Slow Bowl and it does slow a dog down in terms of eating.

And as you can see, because this bowl is so small it looks like he's getting a lot of food.  So, this is a good feeding bowl for the human to use.  This way the human don't feel bad for what they feel is such a small amount of food.

All ready for dinner

You can see Gramercy licking up the oil and then eating the rest of his meal.

Gramercy says "That was yummers!"

  1. Funky dog smell? What do you attribute that to and why would the coconut oil clear it up?

    1. Yep it was a noticeable funky smell which I think was due to poor nutrition and being overweight. Being overweight puts pressure on organ function and this was causing difficulty with fighting whatever was going on internally. This is why I think the coconut oil helped:
Coconut oil contains lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid that converts in the body to monolaurin, a monoglyceride compound with numerous beneficial properties, including anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-protozoal. Lauric acid actually destroys lipid-coated bacteria, fungus and viruses such as herpes, the measles, influenza, hepatitis C and HIV, ringworm and athlete’s foot.
