A trip down 2012 memory lane - the conclusion of 16 amazing dogs

Buty

Buty was another last minute save. We were actually going to take Kai but, our foster parent in Hood River, Oregon was ready for a dog so Kai went to that great foster home.  We found out that this little gal was not going to make it out and since we were in the mindset of 2 fosters, we said yes to her.  Our volunteer hustled down to the shelter and grabbed this sweet girl for us.

Buty is a small elegant and very sweet girl who had a horrible cold and was underweight.  Clearly she'd not been cared for in a while. With us she was beyond sweet and clearly appreciated being warm, fed and loved.

While in our care, we did get her on some medication for her upper respiratory infection and boy, she perked up pretty quickly! Buty is a very affectionate girl who like many of our foster dogs has excellent doggie manners.  Catty and D'light can be a challenging duo for any dog so I'm always impressed with the fosters who can roll with our dogs. Shortly after Buty was listed on petfinder she received an amazing application.

Buty is now Ellie and as you can see, she loves her rattie mix brother Henry.  There's lots of playing and Ellie loves all the attention from her parents and from really any human!  It's been said that one of Ellie's new loves in life includes sleeping in the bed with her family.  This is such a great story for such sweet, sweet rattie girl.

Cayuse

Oh Cayuse.... we were super excited to get this little guy and we named him after one of our favorite wineries.  This wine is memorable as was this little firecracker of a puppy!

Cayuse like so many was in an overcrowded shelter and time was out.  Given how small (he was only 5lbs and super short), personable and adorable Cayuse is, I was stunned that he needed a foster spot.  Cayuse arrived to us ready for action - he was a very active and busy boy. While Cayuse was small, he was FULL on terrier which brought lots of laughs and lots of sighs - oh, and some curse words.  Cayuse needed someone who wanted a active dog and who had the ability to give this little boy all the attention he needed in terms of getting his body and brain lots of good workouts.  So we sat and waited to see what came in for applications.

Once again - we hit the jack pot!  Cayuse's application was not only awesome for any of our dogs but just what Cayuse needed.  An adopter looking for an above average energy level pup with lot of terrier tude that they can do lots of activities together!  Can you say Cayuse?!

Cayuse is now Usher and he doing fantastic - he loves everyone he meets and he gets around!  Usher and his dad have started a puppy class at one of the local positive dog schools and no big shock he loves clicker training.   So for all you Seattle folks if you see a little confident spotted boy cruising about town it's probably Usher and his dad!

Klipsun

Baby Klipsun (he was 3-4 months old) was like all the other pups we've rescued - in an overcrowded shelter and no adopters...  So up came Klipsun and he was an amazing little boy.  A bit under socialized but, nothing that a dedicated adopter could get worked out in no time.

Klipsun was a lot of fun as we don't usually take such young puppies - he still had wiffs of puppy breath, which I love. Klipsun is a super smart boy - he was playing fetch and tug and was already figuring out sit. We knew this boy would not be with us for long!

Sure enough - Klipsun was in and out. We had a great couple who had applied for Cayuse (Cayuse's application was already in process with his adopter) and we let this couple know about Klipsun. It was clearly love at first sight and tada, Klipsun has an amazing home where he's working on socialization and all that other fun puppy stuff!

Klipsun is now Bartlett and he will be heading to puppy school soon at we know he will be a star pupil.  From what I've heard, this sweet boy is pretty popular with everyone he meets - way to spread the rat terrier/rescue word little Bartlett!

Balboa

Sweet Balboa arrived to us in tough shape - he was really underweight, his coat was rough and he was pretty worried.  I imagine the shelter was a very taxing for this soft, gentle boy.  Shelters are tough on any dog and for a worried boy like Balboa he likely didn't show well so really, rescue was his only way out.  Balboa is a pearl tri-color rattie which we'd never seen a rattie of this coloring.  He's a stunning boy!

Balboa in the shelter

I had a real fondness for Balboa as he reminds me of a much higher function D'light.   Balboa is an under socialized pup (he's only 1-1.5 yrs) who doesn't yet completely trust the world around him.  We did a lot around socialization and he made huge strides with us.  We knew that we needed to find him a special adopter who would allow Balboa to cautiously work on socialization while also nudging him along at a pace that he could work with.  There's a balance of working with an under socialized dog and once the dog and human figure that out, a fantastic relationship is formed and an incredible bond happens.

Well I'm happy to say that we found Balboa the perfect adopter!  When an application comes in the foster parent sends out the "Long bio" of the dog.  My bio's tend to be very long so the applicant know as much about the dog as possible.  This didn't scare off Balboa's dad! When we met he knew Balboa wouldn't "show well" and sure enough that's what happened.  But, it was all good - Balboa's dad had been watching my blog (even before he applied to adopt him) and saw the progress that Balboa was making. This is where a blog is key - it allows an applicant to see all sides of the dog and what the dog is doing while in foster care.    With Balboa, he connects very quickly to a human he trusts and then it's full steam ahead!  I have no doubt that Balboa will soon be head over heals in love with his dad and that this sweet boy will be the well socialized boy he really wants to be.

Balboa went to his new home on Saturday and he's been doing well.  He's still working in getting his bearings and his dad is totally committed to his forever rattie boy.  Once Balboa is more comfortable, he will get to go to work with his dad which will be rat-tastic for him!

Happy life little boy, may your new year be full of love and adventure.

Looking ahead...

We've had a fantastic year of fostering and we are very excited to be a part of saving many more ratties in 2013! Make sure to stay tuned and please keep spreading the word about rescue our rattie's who are looking for amazing homes!
