In working with Dandy we had to start with the bare basics of "marking" the behavior we were seeking from him. He could not tolerate the noise from an i-clicker or a box clicker so we used the word "yes". At first that even was worrisome for him because of the tone but, one he figured out that "yes" = yummy treats he decided to be brave and give it a try. Dandy gets "marked" for all kinds of behavior: relaxing, looking at us, chewing on his bone, basic commands and just for being the sweet boy that he is! A lot of our "marking" is to build his confidence, increase trust and for him to have fun being a rattie.
Well, we have moved up in the world to using the i-clicker in the house and at class and then the box clicker out on walks (since it's louder). If you are curious about clicker training (which I highly recommend) check out one of our other foster parents post
