What's that?

D'light and K were hanging out on the deck...

K taking in the sights and sounds

D'light resting his eyes while enjoying the sun

just a relaxing time for K and D'light

K says "What's that?"

"I see it too"

"Should we be concerned?"

"Naww but, lets just rattie stare at it!"

A crow!
The crows will sit on our roof, often times they lean over and squawk at Catty.  It drives Catty insane and I think they torment her on purpose.  Luck for everyone Catty missed this crow.  Where was Catty?

K asks, "Anyone want to play with me?" Part 1

Sweet K clearly loves other dogs!  I often feel bad that our two are not the playful type but, K has been able to get both D'light and Catty to play with her.

It's nice that we can mix in some touch and then tug (D'light style).

K does a lot of wanting to lick D'light and Catty's lips - this an appeasement gesture on K's behalf.  You can see her doing it in the video below.  She's throwing all kinds of these gestures a D'light hoping to engage him.  You can see where she does the very soft play bite (another gesture) on D'light's leg.  He didn't appreciated that and she quickly figured out that wasn't the way to his heart.

Both D'light and Catty are lacking in the dog social skills arena but, for most dogs what K is telling them is pretty clear.  I really want to play and I will do anything to show you how much fun I can be!

You can see K isn't ready to play tug with me (which is just fine) but, D'light is back for more tug!

Fetch and tug - it's fun to watch K relax enough to bring out her inner rattie.
Look at her shake that toy!

Touch it's more powerful than we think

All the work we've been doing with K has been about moving at her pace while building trust with a variety of exercises that I've been blogging about.  She's made huge progress in the 9 days she's been with us.

Day 8 - I'm on my belly and you can see K is starting to think maybe this touch stuff is kinda fun.  She heard my husband come home thus her moving on.

Day 9 - K seeking me out for touch.  I was on the computer so this was interesting since most of the touch has been with me on the floor with her.  Notice I'm not "petting or patting" her.  My strokes are long and deliberate.  She likes to have her ears stroked as well.  What I want to do with K is to give her enough touch that she comes back for more.  I do not want to flood her with touch.

You will see that K does give us stress signals - the sneezing, yawns and I would say the licking is also stress based.  These are low levels of stress signals but, they are important to notice. When K is done - I'm done.  She's taking huge risks with all of this work and with each passing day the stress will diminish again as we move at her pace.

Day 10 - this was from today and I'm sitting on the ground in front of her.  Notice how K makes eye contact with me.  She chooses to move forward with allowing me to touch her.  Again, she likes the ear strokes and the slow touches at the base of her ears.  I use the back of my hand and after watching this realize I should have been moving my hands slower with my touch and there are errors in this video by me - having my hand over her head. You can see she moves away from that.  Lucky for me K is pretty forgiving with my errors. I take deep breaths as I'm working with K around this touch.

This was about 3 minutes later and watch how playful she's becoming.  Her face and body are softer and I'd say she's relaxed and engaged.  At any point had K wanted to move away that would have been just fine.  At the conclusion of these video's we went and found a yummy bully stick for her to chew on while she relaxes. This was a lot of work for K and she's pretty amazing!

For anyone who wonders about the power of touch you've see the difference it makes for a under socialized dog like K.  Again I cannot stress that we are moving at K's pace and because of this that's part of why she's doing so great.

You saw D'light in these video's... he really wanted his turn for touch.  Funny boy here's where he was a the end of the above video.  Not sure he could give me a clearer message of "Please touch me".

I actually never thought that much about touch before we fostered (and later adopted) D'light. Many know of D'light and his history - he was under socialized and abused thus we had an under socialized/fearful dog. He didn't want touch because touch was never used in a positive way with him, in fact touch physically and emotional damaged him.  We began a journey of  TTouch work and he's a very different dog today and I'm a very different person because of our touch journey.

Here's D'light this past weekend.  This bed is next to the computer and this is often what happens when I'm on the computer.  As you can see we now have a dog who not only enjoys touch but, actually asks for it. I love this and I've reinforced D'light's asking for touch!  Times like this I call him Mr. D'manding and I love him dearly.

A relaxing day...

Today was another day of kicking back and enjoying the rain free weekend!

As you can see, K enjoys chasing bugs!

Tired after a good walk and her bug chasing fun.

D'light relaxing
Catty of course found the sun!

I think the dogs like us wish the weekends were longer!

K's meals

K has been with us for a week and as you've seen K is doing well.  So far she's not had an accident in the house, she crates magnificently, she gets along great with our dogs, she doesn't bark and she's not hyperactive.  In these ways she's a very easy dog.  Where she needs on going support is around her trusting humans.  It's very clear she wants to be around us but, continues to be conflicted.   She has made huge progress from last week and we are still a work in progress...

We've reached the point where we are able to hand feed K - meaning she will take food from our hands.  So, to reinforce us humans as being trustful, we are hand feeding K her meals.  This is a great way to work on building connection with any dog.  And really it doesn't take much time but the payoffs are huge.

Below you can see me feeding K her breakfast.  Notice that I go back and forth between still tossing the kibble to seeing if she will take it from my hand.  By tossing the kibble it takes pressure of her having to get close to me for the duration of the meal.  You can also see she's more comfortable with me, her tail is wagging, her body isn't as rigid as the video I posted last week were I was just tossing the kibble to her.

K is a gem - she just needs time and patience from the humans around her.

Happy dogs...

Everyone is thrilled that the sun has come out!  D'light  is able to shed his sweater and both K and Catty clearly love the sun.

Resting and keeping warm - Dlight moved up to the top cushion because he got to warm!

Catty loves the sun

If we are ever looking for K - we just need to find Dlight or Catty...

Pretty K, you can see her face is starting to relax as she settles

Relaxed rattie's

Look who's having fun...

K is relaxing enough to start playing with toys! She's been watching Catty and D'light play tug but, hasn't' been so sure about taking the risk to play herself.

Well check her out with the Skinneeez!

It's fun to see glimpses of K having a good time. She's still skittish and figuring out if she can totally trust us but,  we are not in a hurry and will continue to met K at where she's at.
