Once we knew Kerloo was going to get adopted we opted to immediately take another foster which we knew might be hard for Dandy. But, we figured we could handle Dandy and his special needs while rescuing a dog that had run out of time. The boy we decided to foster is a type B or teddy rat terrier which are shorter than the type A rat terriers. Dandy is a type A for comparison. We are naming the cute little guy Owen. He's about a year old, 9lbs, is said to be a real sweet boy and we are thrilled that we were able to save him.

A couple of days after we had committed to Owen we found out that, there are so many rattie's in the central CA kill shelters that we decided to go into foster dog over load. This little fella (far left in the picture) is said to have an amazing, loving personality -- we are naming this sweet boy Dunham and he's a shorty as well and about 10lbs and as you can see has a full tail.

So what is going on that there are so many rat terriers (close to a dozen that we know of) in Central CA. While we have no way of knowing for sure, a thought is that it's pretty common in farming communities for surrenders/strays to skyrocket near the end of the harvest season. And Central CA has a lot of farming so - perhaps people get puppies, work the season, and then leave 8-12 month old dogs when they move on. From what we know, the Valley shelters are all bursting at the seams right now with all kinds of dogs.
This is sad and pretty disturbing, I'm happy that we were able to rescue these two boys and helpfully we can find them homes quickly so more can be rescued and brought up into foster care.
So stay tuned as this will be interesting with having 4 dogs in the house - 2 of them being youngsters!
