Remember little K, the super skittish girl who needed a special adopter? Well she found herself an amazing set of parents and a wonderful rattie brother named Bogart!
June has really taken to her parents, she sleeps in bed with them and after the 3rd day here's what her mom wrote me: In the morning she will jump on me, stretch so we can rub her armpits, she'll get up in my face saying hello and stay there on her own. Because her parents don't force her to engage with them she's progressing very quickly in building a solid foundation of trust with them.
June's mom has really done an amazing job of educating and enriching her knowledge of how to work with a under socialized dog like June. The updates have been a joy to read and I'm thrilled that June has such a wonderful and committed set of parents who also love her dearly. One note that June's mom sent me is really great (Ahimsa is a force free training school in Seattle that has some great info online and that you can purchase online):
I was reading the Ahimsa dog training manual and it had a great tip that I think I will tell people as a rule. If she comes to you, you can pet her for 3 seconds, then stop. If she moves away she isn't interested, but if she moves closer go ahead and keep doing what you are doing. The people at the vet and daycare were all really good about not forcing themselves on her. I think it helps!
Again with under socialized and fearful dogs it's imperative that human be their advocate and clearly June's parents are doing this for her! Because of the work they are doing with June, they are again building a very strong relationship with her and this will go along ways for June and for the lifetime together. Way to go June and many kuddo's to your parents for doing right by your funny, sweet little rattie self!
